Is your pool surface telling you it’s time?
Pool finishes wear out. In Florida, where a pool runs year-round under hard sun and gets chemically treated week after week, a standard plaster surface typically lasts somewhere between seven and fifteen years depending on how well the water has been balanced. Most homeowners notice the symptoms long before they connect them to the surface.
- Rough patches that scrape feet and swimsuits, especially on steps and the shallow end floor
- Staining and mottling that won’t brush out — grey blotches, rust-colored streaks, or a chalky film
- Chipping or flaking along the waterline, around fittings, or at the tile line
- Hollow-sounding spots underfoot, which usually means the finish has separated from the shell
- Chemistry that won’t hold — a pool that constantly drifts out of balance is often leaching from a failing surface
- Visible cracks, which may be cosmetic or structural and should be looked at before anything is resurfaced over them
One of these on its own may be a repair. Several together generally means the pool is due for resurfacing.
Surfaces and services available in this area
Plaster and quartz resurfacing
Standard white plaster, sometimes called marcite, is the traditional and least expensive finish. Quartz aggregate costs more and holds up considerably better against staining and etching.
Pebble finishes
Exposed pebble aggregate is the most durable and most expensive option. It gives a mottled, natural look and typically outlasts plaster by a wide margin, at the cost of a rougher texture underfoot.
Tile and coping
Waterline tile and coping stone are usually replaced at the same time as the interior surface, because the pool is already drained and the two jobs overlap. Salt air along the Indian River Lagoon is hard on grout and on coping edges.
Structural repair
Cracks, leaks, delamination and bond beam damage are found and dealt with before a new surface goes on. Resurfacing over an unaddressed structural problem wastes the new finish.
Serving Port St. Lucie and the surrounding Treasure Coast
We connect homeowners with contractors working across St. Lucie, Martin and Indian River counties:
- Port St. Lucie — including St. Lucie West, Tradition and River Park
- Fort Pierce
- Stuart
- Jensen Beach
- Palm City
- Vero Beach
Pools in these towns don’t all wear the same way. Older waterfront properties near Stuart and along the barrier islands take salt exposure that inland Palm City pools never see, and the tract-built pools across Port St. Lucie are reaching resurfacing age in waves.
What resurfacing costs around here
Nobody in this trade publishes a firm price, and there’s a legitimate reason for it. Cost tracks the interior surface area of the pool rather than its volume, so two pools holding the same water can differ substantially in price. And no contractor knows what’s underneath the old finish until it’s chipped out — delamination, corroded rebar and shell cracks all turn up mid-job.
What moves the number most:
- Surface type — plaster is cheapest, pebble the most expensive
- Whether tile and coping are replaced at the same time
- Access for the chip-out crew, particularly on screened enclosures and gated communities
- Drain and safety compliance work
- Structural repair discovered once the pool is drained
Get three quotes before you sign anything, and make sure each one covers the same scope. A low number that excludes tile, startup service or a warranty isn’t the cheaper job it looks like.
How it works
- Tell us about your pool. Rough size, what’s wrong with it, and where you are.
- We pass it to a licensed local contractor. We only connect homeowners with contractors who hold an active Florida pool and spa contractor license, verifiable through the state’s licensing database.
- They come out and quote it. Resurfacing needs a site visit — anyone quoting over the phone is guessing.
- You decide. No obligation, and nothing to pay us.
Common questions
How long does resurfacing take?
Most residential jobs run about one to two weeks from drain to refill, depending on the finish and whether tile and coping are being replaced. Weather and any structural repair found along the way can extend that.
Do I need a permit to resurface my pool?
It depends on where you live and exactly what’s being done. Florida’s building code leaves some of this to the discretion of each local building official, so the answer genuinely differs between Port St. Lucie, unincorporated St. Lucie County, Martin County and Indian River County. Your contractor should know the rule for your address and pull the permit if one is required.
Can I just patch the bad spots instead?
Sometimes. An isolated chip or a single hollow spot can be repaired. But patches rarely match the surrounding finish, and once wear is showing across the whole pool, patching tends to buy a season rather than solve the problem.
What happens right after the new surface goes on?
The first thirty days matter more than most homeowners expect. A fresh plaster surface is soft and chemically reactive, and fill water that’s low in calcium and alkalinity will pull calcium straight out of it, causing etching and blotching. Ask any contractor you’re considering how they handle startup chemistry.
How do I check that a contractor is licensed?
Florida requires contractors to display a license number in their advertising, and you can verify any of them through the Department of Business and Professional Regulation’s public licensee search. Look for an active Pool/Spa Contractor license with no open discipline, and confirm the name on the license matches the company quoting you.
